The Institute for Social Transformation (IST) was founded in 1994 by Fr. Francesco Pierli, a Comboni missionary. The Comboni Missionaries was founded in 1867 by Daniel Comboni who strongly believed in the regeneration of Africa by Africans, and spent most of his life empowering communities around the continent.
He developed a pioneering strategy to “Save Africa through Africa,” emphasizing the empowerment of African people in their own evangelization. His dedication led to the establishment of the Comboni Missionaries and the Comboni Missionary Sisters. Even as he battled adversity, including famine and slavery, Comboni’s unwavering faith and efforts laid the foundation for ongoing missionary work in Africa, a legacy that continued to flourish even after his death in 1881.
IST has evolved into a distinguished institution committed to promoting social justice, education, and community development. Its initiatives target marginalized groups, equipping them with essential resources to enhance their quality of life. Through collaboration with local partners and leveraging its members’ expertise, IST remains dedicated to advancing Daniel Comboni’s vision of sustainable development and comprehensive societal transformation across Africa.
